CHAPTER SIX

WHEN she walked into the dining room minutes later to join Morgan for supper, Selena’s gaze went immediately to the crystal vase of red roses sitting near her place on the polished table. And then she realized there were two vases of roses, with one sitting just beyond the other.

Em and Minna were putting food on the table, and when they looked over at her they beamed with wide smiles.

“The flower shop delivered these while you were outside, Selena,” Minna told her. “And there’s two of ’em—look!”

Em was excitedly wadding the hem of her apron in her hands, and both women were clearly delighted. “We were just trying to guess who all sent ’em.”

“Hurry up and read the cards,” Minna urged as Selena crossed to the table.

Morgan stood next to his chair at the head of the long table, his expression solemn. Selena tried to ignore him as she reached for the first card. She took a moment to lean forward and inhale more of the rich rose scent before she drew back and opened the flap of the tiny envelope to take out the card. She read it aloud.

“‘Hope to see you while you’re home. Get well, Lonnie.’”

Minna burst out with, “Gotta be Lonnie Black. He just got the rodeo outta his system and moved back home. Must be thinkin’ of settling down.”

“Well, shoot,” Em said, “he’s not the one I thought of first. Didn’t think that one had etiquette enough to go to a flower shop and write out a card like that.” Then to Selena, “It looks like a man’s writing, don’t it?”

Selena passed the card across the table to Em so she could see it for herself. Em tilted it a bit as she briefly studied the lettering. “Don’t look like Lucy’s hand, so it’s gotta be Lonnie’s. Says a lot that he’d go write it himself instead of calling in the order.”

“Lucy owns the shop, Morgan,” Minna informed Morgan in an aside, as if he was some stranger who didn’t know who did what in the area. Giving Morgan little reminders like that was a regular thing for the sisters, and Selena stifled a smile at the habit.

But Selena was suddenly aware of Morgan’s ongoing silence, and it made her feel more than a little self-conscious as she reached for the second card and opened it.

“This one says, ‘Get well, darlin’,” she tried not to cringe over that word, “and let me take you to dinner. C.” Though it was hardly romantic verse, Selena was sure the message would sound sappy to a man as macho as Morgan. The sisters were thrilled.

“I was the one who guessed Cole Brooks might be one of ’em, didn’t I, Em?”

“Yup. But no telling if C is for Cole. Could be Cass. I was hopin’ for that cute Jess McClure. He’s got finer manners. You’d a thought he’d be the one sending roses. Remember that pretty corsage he gave Selly for the prom? He was always one to send flowers.
